The art strengthens community identity, enhances the resident experience, and demonstrates how thoughtful curation can transform shared spaces in affordable housing environments.
“From the start, the goal was simple: create art that residents could connect with.
The project included outdoor murals, indoor sculptures, and wall installations that brought warmth, character, and a sense of unity to the building. We issued a call for artists, reviewed many talented submissions, and selected a solid bunch. We were delighted to be part of this project.”

Alder House
SE Portland, OR
Project Overview
Pero Design partnered with Community Development Partners and a collective of local artists to create a cohesive art program throughout Alder House. This project focused on celebrating community character and creating a sense of place for residents through accessible, layered artistic interventions across multiple floors.
Key Areas of Focus
Prints on metal and framed prints installed throughout residential floors
Custom window decals to add texture and visual interest in common areas
Thematic art direction unique to each floor to create identity and orientation
Collaboration with multiple local artists to highlight community voices
Art used to enhance wayfinding, warmth, and connection for residents
Project Impact
The Alder House art program infused each floor with its own distinct identity. By layering prints, decals, and artist-led themes, shared spaces became more than corridors—they became visual landmarks that build pride of place and strengthen the fabric of the resident community.
“Alder House has a rich history in Portland, which we were able to use to find just the right artists for it.
Portland bridges for the corridors, a colorful mural in the entry that grabs history of the Founder and the alder trees for the window vinyls designed by a local artist.
